Noe Montez joins the Department of Drama and Dance after serving as the Dramaturg at the Cleveland Play House and on the faculties at Cleveland State University and John Carroll University. His interdisciplinary research explores the intersections of performance, developmental psychology, memory and trauma. His dissertation Staging Post-Memories: Commemorative Argentine Theatre 1989-2003, discusses memory politics among Argentine theatre artists who subverted institutionalized mandates for forgetting the Dirty War of the 1970s and 80s. His most recent projects are "Autobiographical Memories, Museums, and the Deconstruction of Oral History in Federico Léon's Museo Miguel Ángel Boezzio" and entries in the Encyclopedia of Latino Folklore. Forthcoming projects include continued research into Argentine theatre of the late 20th century, The Oklahoma State Penitentiary Rodeo, and a paper on Noe's directorial work with Cleveland Public Theatre's Y-Haven Project, a devised performance piece created with fourteen homeless men recovering from drug and alcohol addiction. Noe has presented his research at several conferences including: the Association for Theatre in Higher Education Conference, the Comparative Drama Conference, the Mid-America Theatre Conference, and Situating August Wilson in the Canon and the Curriculum at Howard University.
As a theatre director, Noe is interested in staging contemporary plays that have "an axe to grind." He is particularly fascinated by theatre artists who create politically-motivated, non-realistic art, and who wish to investigate identity and power through kinetic play.
Noe will also teach as affiliate faculty for the Latin American Studies and Latino Studies programs.
